Gold Award at Lepine compitition 2005, ERS is a patented gearing system with a belt, two freewheels and an elliptical chainwheel.
What is ERS System innovation ?
The chain is substituted by a flexible belt to make pedalling more fluid, front chainwheel is elliptical and assembled on a free-wheel to enable an automatic return to a comfortable position when stopping the bike.
Why does ERS use an elliptical pulley ?
The elliptical pulley acts as an automatic gear. When it is on the horizental position, development is smaller, pedalling is easier, when it is on vertical position, development is bigger, pedalling is harder but the bicycle is already moving, so you do not feel any difficulty.
Why does ERS use two freewheels and a belt ?
Front freewheel assembled on the elliptical pulley with a belt enables to get the chainwheel come back to horizental position (smaller development) to make starting easier. You could not get this function with a chain, which is rigid.
What are the advantages for the consumer ?
